Water Conservation Hints:
To detect a possible leak: check the triangle on the meter face, if no water is being used in the home and the triangle is moving, this may indicate a leak.

Water Usage & Charges:
  • Hydrant and Fire line accounts are billed annually
  • Commercial (most) accounts are billed monthly depending on consumption
  • Residential accounts are billed quarterly

  • Frequently Asked Questions:

Q: How often will I receive a bill?
A: Water is billed on a quarterly schedule.

Q: Why am I responsible for my tenant’s bill?
A: The TOP local law states any unpaid bills are to be relevied to taxes against the property not the occupant making the property owner ultimately responsible for any unpaid water charges. Property owners may request duplicate copies of bill sent to a property in care of a tenant.

Q: What should I do when a tenant moves out?
A: If a tenant moves out of a property a final reading should be scheduled with our office. without an actual reading a final bill cannot be calculated for that tenant. It is in the landlords’ best interest to verify with TOP W&WW Dept that a reading has been scheduled.

Q: What am I responsible for?
A: The customer is responsible for anything from the curb to the cellar and the shut off valve at the meter – the Town of Plattsburgh maintains only the main to curb and the water meter.

Q: How does ownership of property from one owner to another transfer?
A: A final meter reading is taken upon request of current owner (seller); 72 hour notice is requested. New owner information is necessary unless water is being turned off; the final statement is faxed to closing attorney office.
